Saved in ignorance

Two new thoughts tonight & both are thought provoking.

Bishop H. David Burton teaches
"All of us face challenges in our daily lives. Yet in challenges lie some of our greatest opportunities. As we recognize and act on our opportunities, progress, happiness, and spiritual growth follows. We need to be involved in moving the Lord's work forward. The opportunities available to us are endless."
--H David Burton, "A season of opportunity", November 1998 Ensign pg. 9
Sometimes it is awfully hard to face those challenges though.
"Learning and teaching are not optional activities in the kingdom of God. They are the very means by which the gospel has been restored to the earth and by which we will gain eternal life. They provide the pathway to personal testimony. No one can be "saved in ignorance."
--Russell T. Osguthorpe, "Teaching Helps Save Lives", Ensign Nov 2009, 15–17
And I don't think I've ever dug deep enough into my thoughts to have come up with this slant on being saved in ignorance.

Acquiring meekness

More & more frequently I am finding the quotes given are repeats. President Vern R. Peel, my mission president, would always tell us that repetition is the key to learning, or maybe it was Sister Peel. At any rate it seems the 2nd or 3rd time through I learn something just as I did the first time.
"None of us will escape tragedy and suffering. Each of us will probably react differently. However, if we can recall the Lord's promise, "for I the Lord am with you," we will be able to face our problems with dignity and courage. We will find the strength to be of good cheer instead of becoming resentful, critical, or defeated. We will be able to meet life's unpleasant happenings with clear vision, strength, and power."
--Marvin J. Ashton, "Be of Good Cheer", Ensign, May 1986, 66
Bishop H. David Burton in his October 2004 General Conference address tells us meekness "reflects a healthy self-esteem and a genuine self-control." Which I do not have & need to cultivate, just as President Peel used to urge me.

And s'more quotes ...

Since I'm behind on my reading, I try to get caught up by requesting 2 reading assignments a day. Some days it works, some days it doesn't.
"Receiving the Holy Ghost is the therapy which effects forgiveness and heals the sin-sick soul."
--Marion G. Romney, "The Holy Ghost", Ensign, May 1974, 90
And another one:
"Let us never lose sight of the fact that education is a preparation for life -- and that preparing for life is far more than knowing how to make a living or how to land on the moon. Preparing for life means building personal integrity, developing a sound sense of values, increasing the capacity and willingness to serve. Education must have its roots in moral principles. If we lose sight of that fact in our attempt to match our educational system against that of the materialists, we shall have lost far more than we could possibly gain."
--Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 297
I didn't finish this last night, so I'll just add on tonight's. One of the quotes was a repeat,
"Meekness is vital to becoming more Christlike. Without it one cannot develop other important virtues. . . Acquiring meekness is a process. . . More meekness does not translate to weakness, but it is the presentation of self in a posture of kindness and gentleness. It reflects certitude, strength, serenity; it reflects a healthy self-esteem and a genuine self-control (Neal A. Maxwell, "Meekly Drenched in Destiny," in Brigham Young University 1982-83 Fireside and Devotional Speeches [1983], 2). More meekness will allow us to be tutored by the Spirit."
--H. David Burton, More Holiness Give Me, Ensign, Nov. 2004, 99
